Impact of Hybrid Data Storage in the Digital Workplace
The digital workspace is getting filled with more and more hybrid data storage with 82 percent of business enterprises presently involved in organizing a mix of cloud and on-premise storage infrastructure. Public cloud storage is very often used to supplement internal data storage. A hybrid cloud has flexibility, is more secure, offers stability, reduces latency and is cost effective. The policy engines most often use data on-site, while at the same time move inactive data to the cloud. Hybrid data storage installations provide business enterprises the elasticity, combining the mobility of the cloud with the performance and security of the on-premises infrastructure. The challenge associated with the movement of large amounts of data is the time for migration.
Egnyte, a company that provides software for enterprise file management and sharing, analyzed over 14 petabytes of data across thousands of businesses around the world to understand the trends better, around the content that is stored, shared and collaborated. The analysis revealed a number of trends that included businesses that have increased their storage footprint by 55 percent Year over Year (YoY). The average file size for all businesses in 2018 has been 3.13 MB, up from 2.59 MB in 2015, fostering a growth of 20 percent. The video storage increased by 43 percent YoY and the media and entertainment industry is averaging over 7.7 MB per file amongst others.
